EUROSPAR Templemore install Defibrillator

Supermarket to provide life-saving equipment for local community

EUROSPAR Templemore has successfully raised the funds necessary to provide for the installation of a potentially life-saving Defibrillator on the external wall of their supermarket. This is part of the ongoing EUROSPAR initiative to have a Defibrillator installed at every EUROSPAR in Ireland.

The Defibrillator at every EUROSPAR Supermarket programme sees individual EUROSPAR Supermarkets raise funds for the installation of a publically accessible, automatic external defibrillator (AED) to be located outside of their supermarket. Funds are raised through in-store collection, community fund-raising activities and contributions from the sale of a selection of SPAR Range products.

EUROSPAR Templemore installed their defib outside their supermarket on Friday 1st March, during a charity day held at the store.

Store manager Lorraine Kelly of EUROSPAR Templemore is delighted that her store has raised enough funds to install the defibrillator for use by the local community, “Having a lifesaving defibrillator outside our store and making everyone aware of it will hopefully result in saving lives in this community. I am really proud of the fact that we are providing this vital asset to the local community and want to thank everyone who helped us fundraise for such a worthy cause.”

When a heart stops beating from cardiac arrest every second counts. The chances of recovery are reduced by 7 – 10% after each 60 seconds. Effective CPR coupled with the use of a defibrillator within the first 3 – 5 minutes of cardiac arrest can produce survival rates in the 49% – 75% range. This is the significance of the new Defibrillator at every EUROSPAR Supermarket initiative for each community in Ireland served by a EUROSPAR Supermarket.

According to Malachy Hanberry, EUROSPAR Managing Director, “EUROSPAR Supermarkets are located at the heart of local communities. Therefore, we wanted to come up with an initiative that looks after the well-being of the people in our communities and what better way than to install defibrillators outside our stores. EUROSPAR is focused, in a very tangible way, on helping to save lives in the local community and I want to congratulate Derek, Lorraine and the team at EUROSPAR Templemore.”

The Defibrillator will be located on the external wall of the supermarket for use by the local community 24 hours a day. Access to the cabinet is via code which can be retrieved via staff in store or via 999 at any time.
